Today I ask: when I stand naked before God will I feel the need to hide like Adam and Eve? Will I have passed the tests that Jesus passed—greed, self-aggrandizement, taking God and his great love for granted? More likely I will need to throw myself at God’s feet repeating over and over again the Psalm’s response “Be merciful, O Lord, for I have sinned”. Paul speaks words of comfort to me saying (and I paraphrase): though sin entered the world in Adam, Jesus, the new Adam, did not sin. Therefore, because he is the perfect atonement for sin, we have hope for forgiveness and life eternal. Paul tells me that movement toward contrition (see the words of today’s Psalm) will be a step in the right direction. Looks like celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation would be a good idea.
