The Gospel is the well-loved Prodigal Son tale. https://bible.usccb.org/readings/calendar. We are encouraged to place ourselves into the story. It is easy to think of the wayward son as us, and maybe even the son who stayed home because we feel his indignation. And the God-like father waiting patiently always ready to forgive and welcome home. We want to be that person. But have we ever tried putting ourselves in the sandals of the mother? She is not even mentioned but imagine her anguish. First the rupture of the family caused by her errant son. How many nights did she cry for her son to come home and pray that he was safe? Then she saw the anger building up in her other son. I’m guessing there was strain between him and his father. It spilled over upon the return of his brother. Was she thrust into the role of mediator? Family tensions can take a huge toll on the members. Do we need to ask for or give forgiveness within our family? Do we need to thank the mediator?
