Our father in faith, Abraham, is given a promise by God in the first reading for today, from Genesis, which begins the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible). God makes a covenant with Abraham that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars of the heavens. Children were, and hopefully still are, considered blessings. So, God is also promising to bless Abraham abundantly. Our Psalm tells us that we will see the Lord, and in Luke’s Gospel, Jesus is transfigured before the eyes of Peter, James, and John, his disciples. What a blessing! Our blessings will be manifold; in fact, I must say that mine have been countless already. I have a wonderful spouse, health, great parents, a loving family, comfortable home, and the list goes on and on. I try to take time to remember my many blessings, countless as the stars. And I wait for the best blessing of all—to see Jesus as he really is. I am trying to live as a woman who truly believes that “I shall see the Lord in the land of the living,” as our Psalm promises. I pray that you believe God’s promise to you. Look up at the stars, count them if you can. God blesses you like their number. Today, let’s try to count our blessings, and then give thanks.
