Today Moses warns the Israelites to be on guard and not forget the Lord. https://bible.usccb.org/readings/calendar. He implores them to remember the past and all that the Lord God did for them. That is still a message for today. Jesus says he has not come to destroy the former ways, but to fulfill them. So, what are we to do with what seems conflicting ideas? Do we abandon our past? No, that is not a good strategy, we are apt to get lost. Even with all her warts, the Church has much to offer. Moses asks, “What god is as near to his people as our God?” The answer is: None. We have been given a way to the Lord God—just like the Israelites. Our newer path goes through Jesus via scripture, the sacraments, and community. Another time Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” He is our guide, our compass, to holding the past dear, while moving forward. Happy orienteering! Photo seekpng.com
