An Easter Wednesday Thought

One of the most moving of the resurrection stories is today’s Gospel. The story from Luke’s Gospel of two disciples walking to Emmaus. Jesus joins them, but they do not recognize him until after they invite him to break bread with them. I got to wondering, is that how we must recognize Jesus in our midst—by inviting people to share a meal or by sharing our bounty with others in some form? Is Jesus most present to us in the afflicted, the sick, the lonely, the poor? Yes, today’s Gospel has a Eucharistic meaning as well, but if we cannot recognize Jesus in those around us who need to be fed in some way, how will we recognize him in a wafer of bread? Do an act of kindness today. Feed someone who is hungry in some way and see Jesus.   April 7, 2021
