Friday after Ash Wednesday

What can I expect to see on my journey toward God? Maybe more importantly, Do I see anything on my journey or am I so caught up in myself that I am blind to what is all around me? Isaiah the great prophet, chastises me for not offering to God what is really wanted. God does not want my empty recitation of prayers or my writing of checks for a good cause. What God wants of me is much harder—to see the need and do something. Actually get my hands dirty by visiting the sick, incarcerated, serving at the soup kitchen, babysitting for a friend, visiting a lonely elderly person. Don’t get me wrong, God is pleased when I fast to be in solidarity with the hungry, donate clothing, or write that check for a worthy cause. It is just that I need to get busy. I don’t know what you may need to do that will take you out of your comfort zone and closer to God—only you can know that. Find a friend to help make that first step toward really seeing what is along the way on our journey, discerning what’s required, and then doing it.
