The author of Isaiah calls us to fast, but warns that the Lord God is not pleased with our fasting as we usually do it. He goes on to explain what type of fasting pleases the Lord. “Have I gotten into a rut with my fasting?” ask yourself. Is chocolate, alcohol, candy, video games, and the like, that we do every year, really pleasing to the Lord and beneficial to us and the greater world? Isaiah tells us to fast from selfishness, prejudice, thoughtlessness, and calls us to live in the world, not harming it or others, but making it a better place for generations to come. Chocolate and alcohol is much easier.
