We have a Screech Owl near our church St Catherine of Siena. We stop to visit him/her when we walk to daily Mass sometimes. If we are lucky, there are two of them, the red and the gray phase. They are the cutest little guys, but they never talk. If we want to hear them, I guess we’d have to go after dark. They have a very eerie call that can sound like a woman in destress, or a call this is almost horse-like. It is not your typical hoot-hoot owl. What I love about the little owl is that even though it appears to be sleeping, its head moves as we do. H/she is clearly keeping an eye on us, lest we doing anything that it would give it cause for reproach. Since owls are noted for their wisdom, I am sure that if it really knew me, it would have several good reasons to reproach me. I am content to have ours be a superficial relationship. I also suspect that since owls are mostly see in the day and therefore not talking, that is why they are considered to be wise. You see, we learn much more by keeping our mouths shut than by talking. And we can appear to be wise if we are silent. When we open our mouths, we always run the risk of proving to the world just how unwise we truly are. So, this very cute little owl, can teach several lessons. Thought for today!!
