We get a first taste of what is to come. Today’s scriptures foreshadow Holy Week. The prophet Jeremiah knows that those in power are out to get him. They want to be rid of him because he prophesies of an uncomfortable truth—their destruction if they don’t change. Our Psalmist is aware of snares and traps but believes he will ultimately be vindicated. Then in Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus predicts his own death by crucifixion. Now we have been warned that if we follow the teachings of the last few days, we will wind up being hated and maybe even killed. Am I ready, willing, and able to take that on? Would I die for my faith? Would you?
