Ash Wednesday And we are off! Right at the beginning of Lent, we are given the beautiful reading from Joel 2:12-18. The prophet assures us that the Lord is calling us. “…return to me with your whole heart.” The journey begins. But we are not to make this journey alone. We are to call an assembly, we are to gather the young and old, the priests and neighbors, and then to move toward God as a vast herd moves toward water. Think of how much easier our trek will be if we help one another. Jesus tells us in the Gospel (Matt6:1-6, 16-18) that prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are acceptable offerings to make to God. He also warns us not to make a show about our piety, but we are not told that we must not ask for help. Whatever discipline you choose to do this Lent, it will be easier if you have a buddy to help you. Then, together, you will move toward God and Easter. Bon Voyage.
