Thursday Week 5 of Lent April 10, 2025
Genesis: God changed Abram’s name to Abraham which means “the father of nations.” But did the changing of his name change the man? Was he really different? Does acquiring a title change that person fundamentally? If one becomes a doctor, a member of the clergy, or president of the United States—do they change fundamentally? A wolf in sheep’s clothing is still a wolf. A pedophile or sadist or thief is still that even with a collar, a white coat, or a 3-piece business suit. People can evolve, yes, they can, and we should pray for them and ourselves, but it requires more than merely changing a name or acquiring a title. We need to know a person’s character before trusting them. God knew Abram’s character, trusting him to become “the father of nations.”
