Wednesday 4th Week of Lent March 17, 2021

Today we hear one of my favorite images of God from Isaiah. https://bible.usccb.org/readings/calendar.  Can a mother forget the child of her womb? No. God is the mother tenderly cradling her beloved child. God is the mother giving nourishment to her child. God is the mother gently reproving and teaching her child. God is the mother who loves unconditionally. So often we hear God called ‘Father’. Today we are given a chance to think of God in a totally different way. Not stern, but gentle. Not judgmental, but compassionate. Here is an image we can warm to, because it emphasizes God’s warmth. Remember as a child running to your mom with a skinned knee, or bee sting, or to admit we broke the vase. Today, we are reminded that we can run to our Mother-God when we need comfort and to admit guilt. Remember the kiss on the knee? God will be equally gentle even has She picks up the pieces of that broken vase.  Image by istock
