Monday 5th Week of Lent March 22, 2021

The readings today deal with a taboo subject—adultery.  https://bible.usccb.org/readings/calendar.  We seldom talk about it today but it was, and still is, a big deal. The penalty was stoning then as it is now in some countries. Jesus is not interested so much in the fact that this was sinful and that she had been “caught”. He seems more interested in how judgmental the crowd is. The story from Daniel has similar themes of sin and judgment. “Let those who are without sin throw the stones.” Just how pure are we when we judge others? Have we never been guilty of the same transgression or at least thought about it? We can never know the underlying story because all we see is the outcome. Think stealing bread because you have no income. People were transported to Australia for that. No, we are quick to judge and to think too highly of ourselves. Lets work on humility and keeping an open mind.   Image from Pathoes
